Finding the Bright Spots
Recently I was reading a chapter in a book called “Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard”. It’s a really fascinating depiction of the process of making change happen, in our personal lives, in our careers, in leadership, wherever change needs to happen. It’s centered on the premise that in order for change to happen, you must convince your rider (your thinker and analyzer) and elephant (your will and emotions) to align to go down the right path.
How many of us have struggled to get our elephant on board with a carefully constructed plan, only to lose momentum because your heart wasn’t in it? Or, likewise, how many of us have stumbled off passionately in a direction, without fully thinking the plan through only to find ourselves exhausted and frustrated with the lack of results? Any efforts to motivate one without the other will lead to failure. Sidenote-Isn’t it interesting how psychologists have caught up with biblical principles?
During this Thursday’s bible study, I want to discuss just exactly how each of us can successfully motivate both our riders and elephants to identify the bright spots. By bright spots, I mean areas where we’ve experienced success with a previous issue, so that we can figure out what led to that initial win and learn how to scale our success.
Preparing to engage Thursday evening @ 7pm
- First, read three biblical case studies and see if you can identify the bright spots: Genesis 12:10-20; Genesis 20, Genesis 26:1-16
- Second- do some research, what does the bible have to say about learning from either your successes or failures? Come with at least two scriptures to support your point of view
- Find what is working-We’re going to each pick one issue as a couple that we’ve been facing (doesn’t have to be anything deep, can be as simple as getting your child to eat their vegetables)- and think back to a time where you’ve had success with that particular issue or, if none comes to mind, where you’ve heard of another’s success with that issue. What specifically were the indicators that things were working?
- Figure out how to replicate what’s working- this is the difference between being problems focused and solutions focused.
